My father loved architect-designed furniture, and collected several pieces by Thonet, Van Der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. When I was growing up, our living room featured a pair of Grand Confort chairs, designed by Le Corbusier and produced in chrome with tan leather cushions.

After decades of use, the cushions were pretty worn, and my parents decided to replace them. I took a set of the old cushions, and with my son, assembled a budget version of the chair using steel pipe from the hardware store. We started with stock lengths of pipe, but achieving the necessary dimensions required cutting with a hack-saw and thread tool. It was an oily, messy job, but the end result was satisfying. It's a pretty cool chair for a teen boy's room.
